When commercial real estate fell on hard times, along with the rest of the economy several years ago, debate inevitably began about how the recovery would look. Was there enough commercial real estate already built? Would commercial real estate building starts eventually recover to prior levels?
The assessment of existing commercial real estate is more complicated than it may first appear because the crux lies not only in traditional features (like location and square footage) but also in how the internal space is configured. Essentially, each space will require evaluation based on its suitability to the modern worker and workflow.

The Morphing of America’s Office Space
Office Relocation and Expansion Made Simple
Depending on the type of business being created, expansion and mobility may be two
of the pillars from which to start the overall business plan. Indeed, even those beginning
as private contractors may find themselves on the move, due to industry trends or
personal reasons. Failure to plan for the possibility of a move can inhibit growth, derail
momentum, and frustrate the employees involved.
A long-term lease (or actual real estate ownership) is a significant hindrance to company
mobility. Fixed costs on office and facility locations work well when planning a budget;
however, when these locations no longer serve the needs of the company, extracting them
from the
What Makes a Productive Work Space?
It comes as no surprise that a recent survey of CoreNet members found that 78% of them agree “that the physical workplace is a driver of employee productivity and satisfaction.” One of the greatest predictors of success in any endeavor is a conducive environment, and business owners and administrators routinely evaluate the workplace in an effort to modify it when circumstances dictate that changes be made.
What is surprising is that more than one in five respondents didn’t value the workplace as a driver of productivity and satisfaction. While this surely strikes most as a “Wow!” statement, anyone who has kicked
Are Amenities Difference Makers?
With the wide array of office options available to the modern worker, contemplating where to conduct business can make for a dizzying decision. The allure of home beckons, even as the hustle and bustle of the office building (or even the local coffee shop) attracts the social urges within all of us.
While most workers may not get to choose where they work once they accept a job, a certain percentage of the workforce does get to choose. And even though each person’s situation is different (startup entrepreneurs, Internet contractors, downsizing office workers), certain amenities offered by Office Suites PLUS have
Office Space Trends Toward Fluidity
As the way in which a company is physically configured continues to evolve, focus has shifted to the manner in which office space is used. No longer simply a status symbol used to project a robust company image, office buildings now must measure up primarily as efficient tools used by the employees working within their walls.
To that end, recent trends have moved away from separating workers based on rank and moved toward bringing together groups in more efficient ways. Bosses give up privacy but obtain greater collaboration, influence, and access in exchange.
In truth, the fluidity and flexibility inherent in office
Local Charitable Organizations Need Extra Help During Holiday Season
In late December, members of our corporate team and their families took some time out of their busy schedules to assist the local Ronald McDonald house in Lexington, Kentucky. The Ronald McDonald House allows families to access specialized medical treatment by providing a place to stay at little or sometimes no cost. The charity sent out emails asking for help during the holidays for volunteers to fix meals for their residents. Our Office Suites PLUS employees gladly offered their assistance.
The volunteers donate the food supplies and prepare the meal in the house’s kitchen which is filled with the necessary pots,
Happy
It’s a new year. Resolve to be happy and to look forward. The past couple of years have been tough for many people — and I am not guaranteeing the future will be any easier. What I can say is that the years leading to the Great Recession were pretty good; good for homeowners, good for banks, good for investors, good for businesses. It is now time for us to stop comparing our situations to how they were and begin evaluating them for how they are. It is time for us to choose an attitude of happiness instead of dwelling
Time Flexibility Key to Workplace Health
A healthy workforce is a productive workforce. Business executives perhaps overlook this aspect of company planning when initially crunching numbers on the expected cost of doing business. Sometimes they realize all too late how much the temporal structure impacts employees, just like rules and operating procedures.
The effects of implementing a company dress code are generally predictable. When a dress code or uniform is in place, employees are expected to look a certain way. Many companies take this bit of structure to the next level by sending people home who aren’t in uniform.
The same applies to the work schedule. When a

Where Workers Are Going in the Near Future
A poll recently conducted by The Future of Work (PDF) attempted to glean some insights on workforce expectations for the near future. Among the topics discussed, work patterns, employment rates, and technology’s impact stood out as some of the more interesting points.
Nearly three out of four respondents agreed that the future held more opportunities for some type of remote working. That number was even higher amongst those who work for large organizations (greater than 1000 employees). What seems evident is that corporate America is catching on to the benefits of reexamining the office environment.
First, with the need to employ a large
